NEJICOMMU
A name formed by the joining of two seemingly distant ideas: neji, the humble screw—an ordinary component found everywhere—and communitas, a sociological concept describing a state of human connection that exists beyond structure, hierarchy, and convention. Together, they become nejicommu: a quiet proposition on how objects, like people, can hold both order and freedom at once.
While studying sociology, the idea of communitas lingered—an imprint of something essential yet elusive. Years later, during an apprenticeship in a bespoke bag atelier, the rhythm of making overtook language itself, and that concept faded into the background. It resurfaced only at the moment of independence, as a compass: a desire to create not only within the logic of function or norm, but also through care, intuition, and even contradiction. Work that may not always be rational, but is always deliberate.
A neji is a fastening device—its spiral groove cut along a cylinder or cone, binding elements together through quiet precision. Communitas, as described by anthropologist Victor Turner, stands in contrast to structure: it is anti-hierarchical, egalitarian, and non-rational—a social condition where distinctions dissolve. Turner proposed that society is shaped through the interplay of both structure and communitas. NEJICOMMU exists within this tension.
Founded in Tokyo in 2001 by Sayuri Fujii, the brand operates as an independent, one-person studio practice. Each piece is created using authentic, time-honored tools, shaped slowly and with intention. Fujii’s background—studying sociology before training under a master watchmaker—infuses the work with both conceptual depth and technical precision.
NEJICOMMU watches are not simply instruments for measuring time. They are vessels for accumulation—objects designed to carry the layered memories of daily life, to be worn, lived with, and gradually transformed through use. Each mark, each subtle shift, becomes part of an ongoing narrative.
Moving fluidly across the boundaries of craft, product, and gender, NEJICOMMU resists fixed categories. It embraces a quieter form of luxury—one that is editorial in spirit, artisanal in execution, and deeply human in its intent.
